$4,950 (per person, based on double occupancy)

This photography workshop will take us on an excursion through northern Norway. We'll spend time visiting the fjords, islands, caves and villages. In addition to capturing the infamous midnight sun, other major photographic themes covered in this tour will be nature landscapes, light, cultures and animals. Other highlights include zodiac rides through the fjords, a barbecue dinner on the beach, and exploring fishing villages set in the backdrop of mountain landscapes.

ITINERARY

DAY 1 - LOFoten - svolvaer

You will arrive during the day, by plane or boat/ferry in Svolvaer although this way of travelling will mean that you arrive in Svolvaer quite late. Therefore, it is better to come a day earlier. The flight from Bødo to Svolvaer takes about half an hour. We will pick you up and bring you to our accommodation on the seafront in Svolvaer. In the early evening we meet for introductions, a trip briefing and one wonderful welcome dinner.

Dinner and overnight in Svolvaer.

DAY 2 - svolvaer - austvag island

Today we will explore Svolvaer and the eastern part of Lofoten; Laukvik, Raftsundet, Digermulen and more. This area is very rich in opportunities for photography such as the sea, derelict houses, fishing docks, hanging rows of drying cod, sea birds and more. Following dinner we leave for an evening to midnight road trip on north side of the Austvåg Island to photograph the sunset in some of the beautiful bays and inlets.

Dinner and overnight in Svolvaer.

DAY 3 - reine

This morning we set out for Reine where we will spend our next four nights. An early stop is Henningsvær fishing village situated at the foot of Mount Vågakaillen. Consisting of a group of isles and islets spread out at random in the blue waters of the Vestfjord there can be perfect reflections of the bay with a mountain backdrop to make for some special images. We have lunch in a small traditional cafe in the village Unstad. The remainder of the short journey to Reine will be punctuated by several photography stops for this road is one of the most scenic in all of Norway. No doubt we will stop in Hamnøy, a tiny idyllic fishing village surrounded by mountains that reflect dramatically in the sea. Hamnøy is right next to a "drive-in bird cliff" like a crack in the rock where the calling Kittiwakes echo between mountain walls. After settling into our accommodation at Reine we take an evening photographic stroll around this fascinating area.

Dinner and overnight in Reine.

DAY 4 - birds - boats - caves

Sunrise comes early at this time of the year and there are some spectacular images to be had overlooking Reine or right from the front veranda of our accommodation! In theafternoon, we leave by boat from Reine for a photographically inspiring trip around the southern tip of Lofoten; our destination being the cave of Refsvika. On the way we will pass abandoned fishing villages and sail through Moskenesstraumen (The Maelstrom), a system of tidal eddies and whirlpools, some of the strongest in the world. The current attracts whales, seals and white-tailed eagles. Upon landing we walk along the coast to the Kollhellaren cave with 3000-year-old wall paintings. The cave is 50 metres high and reaches 115 metres into the mountain. It is quite magical. The beach below the cave is very scenic in the late evening sun.

Dinner and overnight in Reine.

DAY 5 - midnight cruise in the reine fjord

This morning we will wander around the local area and also have time for individualized picture editing lessons. After lunch, we join the ferry in Reine for a trip across the fjord to Vindstad. From here it’s easy walking around the village and along the fjord. Thetraditional houses and sea birds offer great photographic opportunities. For those full of  energy, there is a walk across a low ridge to the interesting Bunes beach (Bunesstranda) on the north-west side of the island. We return by boat to the Reine fjord surrounded by jagged mountain peaks in time for sunset and dinner in a local restaurant.

Dinner and overnight in Reine.

Day 6 - FLAKSTAD

The morning will be spent in and around Reine, with the opportunity to revisit locations of interest. In the afternoon we drive North to Flakstad. Located near the southern end of the Lofoten archipelago, Flakstad comprises all of the island of Flakstadøya and the northern part of the island of Moskenesøya. The islands are connected by the Fredvang Bridges and the Kåkern Bridge. The large lake, Solbjørnvatnet, lies on the northern part of Moskenesøya in Flakstad. This is a most striking area with mountains framing the classic white sand of Skagsanden beach. To the left of the beach are interesting rocks and to the right is Flakstad church. Lake Solbjørnvatnet is often home to Black Throated Divers (a bird species). If the weather is fine, we will enjoy an evening BBQ on Skagsanden beach.

Dinner and overnight in Reine.

DAY 7 - Nusfjord - Eggum - Svolvær

We will start our return journey to Svolvaer after breakfast. We will take a different route including the scenic fishing village in Nusfjord, one of Norway’s most authentically preserved fishing villages. Here there is a Kittiwake colony, and many other seabirds have their nests in and around the wooden fishing Rorbus cabins. Time and weather permitting, we will visit the dramatic nature reserve at Eggum.

Dinner and overnight in Svolvaer.

DAY 8 - Svolvaer - Sea Eagles - Trollfjorden

The morning is spent in the local area; museums, the aquarium, Lofoten Cathedral, birdlife, the impressive "flakes" where the cod hang to dry are all in walking distance. After lunch we will board our Zodiac and head out to the magnificent Trollfjorden, a dramatic steep-sided fjord. This was once a busy fishing harbour due to its protection from the prevailing winds and weather. Troll Fjord is famous for the Battle of Troll which took place here in 1880. The battle was between fishermen in steam-driven fishing boats and fishermen in "fembøringer" (boats with sails and oars for five oarsmen). The landscape is very spectacular with great opportunities for photographing the eagles.

Dinner and overnight in Svolvaer.
