Day 3 – Bucovina

Painted monasteries and traditional crafts.

We will start the day with a sunrise shoot of the village, after which it will be time to discover Bucovina’s most famous attractions, the Painted Monasteries. Most of the monasteries date from the 15th and 16th centuries and are impressive examples of Byzantine art.

We will visit Sucevita Monastery, set in a beautiful location among gentle hills and Voronet Monastery, known for its colorful frescoes and unique shade of blue.

We can walk up on the nearby hill and photograph it and its impressive surrounding walls from a distance. As we drive through the countryside we can expect to see people traveling by horse carts, sometimes with large loads of hay - very interesting to see and photograph. As we meet such opportunities, we will stop and photograph.

Day 4 – Lazarea, Harghita

Photograph swans and beautiful mountain scenery and gorge.

We will leave behind the region of Bucovina and travel towards Transylvania. One of the stops along the way will be at Pangarati Lake, a place where hundreds of birds live during the cold winters. We can photograph swans and wild ducks as they glide across the clear surface of the water.

We will drive though more mountain scenery and then pass through the Bicaz gorge, an 8-kilometers-long route bordered by impressive mountainous rocks. Nearby there is a small natural lake where we will stop if the conditions are good for photography.

Day 5 – Biertan

Ride a dog-drawn sledge and have a blue hour shoot at a fortress.

In the morning we will have the opportunity for capturing the beautiful Harghita Mountains (part of the Carpathians) by riding a dog-drawn sleigh. We will glide through the snow-covered trails in the sled pulled by a team of Siberian Huskies and take in the surrounding scenery, while enjoying a bit of adrenaline!

The rest of the day will be spent in Biertan, a village of Transylvanian Saxon heritage and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. We will visit the fortified church, an imposing monument that overlooks the entire village and valley and photograph it at blue hour.

Day 6 – Fagaras Mountains

Visit a gypsy family and stay at an ice hotel.

You will then drive towards the Balea Waterfall from where you will take a cable car up to Balea Lake, where the ice hotel is built every year.

The hotel is located high in the Fagaras Mountains, at an altitude of over 2000m. It has double rooms and igloos decorated with furniture made entirely of ice, an ice restaurant where you can serve your meals and even a church made of ice. The ice constructions as well as the mountain landscape also make for interesting photo opportunities.

Our next attraction is Bran Castle. Usually associated with Dracula, Bran Castle is actually a beautiful medieval castle in Transylvania, tastefully decorated by the queen in the 1920s.
