star trails 101 WORKSHOP
jan 17, 2018
WEDNESDAY, 6:30 P.M. - 9:30 P.M.
$150 (per person)
The 'Seize The Stars' Star Trails session is an on-location photography class that will be conducted "in-the field" - my very favorite type of class! Instead of teaching you through a digital presentation or in a classroom, I believe the best way to learn is to get out there and experience it all LIVE, by DOING!
So, let's make it happen! Let's meet for a night under the stars on Jupiter Island and bring them to life in our photographs in a way like never before!
From the beginning steps of gathering the right photo gear to harnessing the perfect camera settings, finding an awe-inspiring composition, and more, you will learn how to seize the stars in a beautiful photograph!
Students will also have the opportunity to exhibit their work in my newsletter and be featured to my social media audience!

bring your gear!
DSLR or mirrorless camera
Memory card that can hold at least 16 GBs (make sure it is empty before our session - we will need all the space we can get!)
At least one fully charged battery; two batteries are ideal
In the event it is cold outside, fully charged batteries will not last nearly as long as they normally do, so it is best if you bring two. Also, mirrorless cameras are known to have short battery life, so if you are using a mirrorless camera, I highly recommend you bring at least two-three batteries.
The above are my suggestions - you know your camera battery life better than anyone, so account for the following: We will be taking around 300 exposures over the course of two hours.
Wide angle lens is ideal (14mm-24mm range; 50mm will be okay too)
These can be purchased on Amazon for approximately $9 and arrive within two days. Make sure you are getting the one that is appropriate for your particular camera. This one is for a Canon Rebel t6i. You can search Amazon or Google for the terms "remote cable release" + [your camera name and model].
If you have an intervalometer, you can use an intervalometer instead of a cable release.
Headlamp (I highly recommend something like this because it can switch between a regular and a red, night vision light. While having a regular light will be important for walking around, having red lights are important for night photographers because this type of light preserves your night vision and does not negatively impact other photographer's exposures in the way that regular light does.)
GOING THE EXTRA MILE WITH YOUR GEAR... (and why you should!)
Bring hand warmers (approximately $7 on Amazon or $5 at your local Walmart) and rubber bands (you don't need me to include a link on where to get rubber bands, do you!? 😉 ).
Why hand warmers and rubber bands? 🤔
Depending on temperatures, dew can accumulate on your lens glass and completely fog up your images! Brilliant photographers have come up with the ingenious solution of securing a couple of hand warmers onto the lens with a rubber band, which keeps the lens warm enough that it prevents the condensation from occurring!
WORKSHOP PRICE includes
- One 3-hour instruction in-the-field (under the stars!) at Hobe Sound Beach in Jupiter, Florida
- Lesson will cover the breadth of capturing star trails (how to set up your DSLR, best camera settings, in-field instruction, strategizing composition, and more)
- Approximately 50% off my "Seize The Star Trails" instructional E-book, which includes a post-processing tutorial (that makes this normally $29 E-book only $15!)!
WORKshop price does not include

- Formalized, one-on-one post-processing instruction outside of my instructional E-book

WEATHER MAKE-UP DATE
In the event the weather is unfavorable (cloudy, rainy, etc.) to the point that it will drastically hinder our possibility of achieving beautiful star trails, a "make-up" date is scheduled for Saturday, January 20th, 2018 from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. in the same location.
Weather will be checked 24 hours before the original session date (Wednesday, January 17th, and then again the same afternoon of the session. A weather-confirmation email notice will be sent to all attendees by 2 p.m. on the day of the session.
