FEB 8-13, 2016

$4,310 (per person, based on double occupancy)

The winter photography workshop in Iceland will take us through the South coast, which is full of photographic delights like the glacier lagoon Jökulsarlón at Vatnajokull glacier, large lava fields, waterfalls Seljalandsfoss, Skogafoss and Gullfoss, rugged coastline Reynisfjara at the village of Vik, and national parks Thingvellir and Geysir geothermal area.

Photographic topics will be icebergs on floating water, contrast of ice against black lava sand, ice sculptures, ice caves, waterfalls, Northern Lights (or Aurora Borealis) at nights where conditions permit and other winter scenery.

The excursions will be complimented by delicious meals with local ingredients, hotel accommodations and a hot bath in the infamous Blue Lagoon.

At Keflavik Airport, you will be met by Esja Travel's representative and driven to the hotel in Reykjavik. You have leisure time until our first group dinner.

Dinner and overnight in Reykjavik.

We start the morning by taking a one-hour flight to Höfn, a small fishing village in the Southeast of Iceland. We then spend the rest of the day exploring the region of Vatnajökull glacier. At Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon, we'll take a short boat tour and cruise amongst the icebergs. The contrast in nature of the Southeast is breathtaking, with spectacular black beaches dominating the white glacier. Serenity, energy and forces of nature combine to make the region a never-to-be-forgotten experience.

Dinner and overnight in the area of Vatnajökull glacier.

Today we visit many of Vatnajökull's surrounding areas and again Jökulsárlón. There are many beautiful places to be photographed. The glacial scenery continues with a visit to stunning Skaftafell, Iceland's largest national park. Here, the landscape has been formed over thousands of years by different influences of fire and water (volcanic eruptions and the glaciers). We will take a walk through the birch woodland as well.

Dinner and overnight in the village of Vík.

We head towards the coast to the basalt caves of Reynisfjara. We'll take a walk on the black beach and have a beautiful view of Dyrhólaey. We then drive to the waterfall Seljalandsfoss and walk behind it. We continue on to the world-famous Geysir region, where hot springs are in abundance such as the famous "Geysir," which has given name to hot springs all over the world. We'll see one of the most active geysers in the area, Strokkur, which spouts up 30 meters. From Geysir we drive to one of the most impressive waterfalls in Europe, Gullfoss. Here you can see thousands of tons of icy water thundering majestically down into a deep gorge.

Dinner and overnight in the Geysir area.

We drive to Thingvellir National Park. Thingvellir is a remarkable geological site and the most historic place in Iceland. The area is part of a fissure zone situated on the tectonic plate boundaries of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. It is a magnificent showcase with all of its faults and the beautiful mountains around it. We continue to Nesjavellir geothermal area and then to the lava fields of Reykjanes peninsula. More than half of the peninsula is covered with lava flows and you will see lava cones and craters of different sizes and shapes. We will walk where the Mid-Atlantic Ridge rises from the ocean and head for the lighthouse on the westernmost tip of the peninsula. We continue to the small fishing village Grindavik and end in the infamous Blue Lagoon for a relaxing dip in therapeutic geothermal water. The Blue Lagoon is surrounded by a moss-covered laws field dating back to 1226.

Photography instructor: Tim Vollmer

Personally, I adore this tour. After all, it’s how I met one of my closest friends, Tim Vollmer! But I also love this tour because it’s truly a one-stop-shop for some of the rarest, most eye-catching landscapes in our world - all just a 5 hour flight from New York City!

Tim was great to work with and extremely helpful.
If I were to conduct a workshop again in Iceland I would ask Tim to assist in a heartbeat.
— Art Wolfe, Seattle, WA USA
I am very happy to recommend Tim and his work. His landscape photography is simply beautiful. Tim’s appreciation of light, composition and his ability to capture the moment is exquisite; with the results on his site speak for themselves.
